荒川にとって、影は単に表面の暗い部分ではない。影は既存のものの反射であって、その物の隠された一面を暴くものである。荒川にとって、氷は単に凍った水ではない。氷は密封された官能性であって、水晶のように透明な平面に閉じ込められた感情であるのである。荒川は「現在」に興味を持たない。彼は「前」と「後」の描写に挑戦している。描かれた廃屋は過去に頼り、かすかなシルエットは悲観か明白な希望のどちらかを表し、風景全体はなにかの前兆によって満たされている。しかし、これらは「この瞬間」のことではないのである。

したがって、「不在」は荒川の作品にとってメインテーマの一つである。しかし、この「不在」は単に物の欠如ではなく、存在の消滅、失った時間の顕現である。このような「存在」の「不在」は、「聞くことのできる静寂」を生み出す。その「視覚的な沈黙」は観客に感染し、観客の聴覚をも取り去ってしまう…
